Deep End by Ali Hazelwood Book Review – A Sports Romance

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶
Taylor Swift Song That Vibes: “Willow”
Tropes: Sports romance, he falls first, forced proximity, STEM, best friend’s ex, light dom/sub
Favorite Quote: “From the very start, you had all the power. From the very start, I was in the palm of your hand.

What Is Deep End by Ali Hazelwood About?

Scarlett Vandermeer has zero time for distractions. She’s a junior at Stanford, recovering from a diving injury that nearly ended everything, and laser-focused on med school. Love? Not in the plan. Especially not when it involves someone like Lukas Blomqvist—Stanford’s golden boy, swim team captain, Olympic hopeful… and her best friend’s ex. Yeah. No thanks.

But when a shared secret forces them into each other’s orbit, what starts as a totally casual, no-feelings-involved arrangement turns into something way messier. And hotter. And confusing. Scarlett thought she was in control—of her emotions, her body, her future—but Lukas has a way of seeing through all her walls. Even the ones she didn’t know were there.

As they grow closer, and the pressure to perform (in and out of the pool) starts to build, Scarlett is forced to confront everything she’s been avoiding—like vulnerability, trust, and what it really means to let someone in.

Deep End is about healing, unexpected softness, and finding love when you’re pretty sure you’re not ready for it. It’s sexy, sweet, a little messy, and totally swoon-worthy.

Why You’ll Love This Sports Romance

💡 Smart Meets Swoon
Scarlett is a brilliant STEM queen, balancing med school prep and recovery like the icon she is. Lukas? He’s disciplined, golden, and lowkey obsessed with her in the softest way.

😭 Vulnerability Goals
Scarlett’s emotional journey is one of the most heartfelt Hazelwood has written. Her therapy arc is raw, tender, and full of growth. She doesn’t just find romance—she finds herself again.

🔥 Spice with Soul
Ali Hazelwood definitely turns up the heat in Deep End, especially compared to her previous books—but don’t let the dom/sub label scare you off. While there’s a hint of a power dynamic (and yes, Lukas does radiate quiet, confident energy), it’s all very soft, tender, and rooted in emotional connection. For anyone who regularly reads 4+ chili pepper books, this one will feel more tame than titillating—think spice with heart, not full-blown kink. You’ll swoon, maybe blush, but mostly fall for how safe and supportive their intimacy feels.

What I Didn’t Love

Okay real talk—the third-act breakup felt a little too predictable. It pulled me out of the emotional momentum, and I just wanted more time watching them thrive together. Give me the cozy, happy chapters where they’re healing together!!

Taylor Swift Song That Matches the Vibe of Deep End: “Willow”

Taylor’s “Willow” is the perfect soundtrack to this story. It’s mystical, magnetic, and dripping with tension—just like Scarlett and Lukas’s undeniable chemistry. Even when they try to stay apart, they’re always pulled back together. The energy? Soft. Powerful. Unshakeable.

Final Thoughts on Deep End

Deep End is a sexy, sensitive, and emotionally rich read that proves healing doesn’t always mean doing it alone. It’s about learning to trust again, being brave enough to open up, and letting yourself be loved fully.

If you’re a fan of slow-burn, swoony college romances, Deep End is going to steal your whole soul. Whether you’re here for the STEM, the steam, or that swimmer-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold energy… this one’s diving straight into your favorites.

  1. I loved this book! (Which, honestly, was a feat in itself because the male audiobook narrator took me right out of the plot every time he spoke.) The fact that I couldn’t get enough despite his terrible accent and speaking like he had no feelings toward Violet despite being madly in love with her says a lot about how great the writing was. I cannot wait for Problematic Summer Romance!

Also, I could definitely see myself going back for a reread on this in the future. I am sure it would slap way harder (dom pun totally not intended) when reading the characters’ dialogue in my head.

    1. Oof, that sounds so frustrating! I didn’t listen to the audiobook and now I’m honestly glad I didn’t. I hate when a narrator takes you out of the story.

I’m also excited for Problematic Summer Romance! I generally really enjoy Ali Hazelwood and look forward to her new releases.
