Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver Review

Spooky season is officially in full swing! Time is flying, and it feels like I was just diving into my summer TBR, only for the warm, sun-filled days to quickly shift into cloudier skies and crisp, cool nights. Personally, the “-ember” months are my favorite, so I was excited to get started on my autumn reading list. First up was Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver. This one was a bit out of my usual element. While I typically lean towards witches and vampires during spooky season, I decided to take a detour into the world of serial killers this time around. Curious to see if Butcher & Blackbird deserves a spot on your autumn TBR? Keep reading to find out!

What is Butcher & Blackbird About?

If you’re looking for a dark, gripping read this spooky season, Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver is a must-have for your bookshelf. This TikTok sensation follows two rival serial killers, Sloane and Rowan, who unexpectedly form a twisted bond after a chance encounter. Their shared hobby? Hunting down and eliminating other serial killers across the country, from the quiet corners of West Virginia to the bustling streets of Boston. As their deadly game intensifies, so does their connection, slowly transforming from a friendship into something deeper and more dangerous. But with the ghosts of their past always lurking, the question remains: can they escape the deadly cycle they’ve created, or will they become victims of their own game? If you’re into slow-burn romances with an edge of danger, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Why Butcher & Blackbird is the Perfect October Read

If you’re looking to dip your toes into thrillers this spooky season, Butcher & Blackbird is the perfect place to start. This dark, addictive novel follows two morally gray serial killers, Sloane and Rowan, who hunt and kill other serial killers in a deadly, high-stakes game. Every year, they compete to be the first to take down another predator, and the tension is palpable as you’re never quite sure if everything will go as planned. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

But don’t worry—Butcher & Blackbird has more than just thrills. The slow-burn romance between Sloane and Rowan is just as captivating as their deadly game. When their relationship finally ignites, it’s explosive. Throughout the story, both characters confront their inner demons, trying to be the best versions of themselves for each other—even if their “best” still involves killing other people. You can’t help but root for them, even with their twisted moral compass.

While I rated the book 3 stars instead of 4 due to my own squeamishness (some of the murder scenes are very graphic and made me a bit nauseous), I was still captivated by Brynne Weaver’s engaging writing style. She perfectly blends dark humor with sinister elements, making this book both thrilling and entertaining. Plus, she even included a playlist to accompany the story, which is a fun bonus! If you’re into thrillers with a dash of romance, Butcher & Blackbird is the ideal October read.

Taylor Swift Song That Matches the Vibe: “Don’t Blame Me”

A great Taylor Swift song to pair with Butcher & Blackbird is “Don’t Blame Me” from her Reputation album. The dark, moody vibe and intense lyrics about obsession and love that feels almost dangerous perfectly complement the eerie, mysterious atmosphere of Butcher & Blackbird. The themes of temptation, power, and surrender in the song align with the complex and haunting energy of the book, making it a fitting soundtrack as you dive deeper into the story.

With Butcher & Blackbird as the latest addition to my bookshelf, I’m ready to fully embrace the spooky season.
